Media City is a large scale public space development and the new home of the BBC and the University of Salford. The site is part of a large regeneration project, which has transformed this part of Manchester.
Barretts of Aspley (BoA) were invited to tender for the provision of decorative and architectural steelwork, including large freestanding feature columns, covered walkways and steelwork for the new tram line station.
BoA were supplied with the architects vision for the 25m tall freestanding columns, which were to be the focal point of the new piazza. BoA set about engineering a solution, including calculating wind loadings & nominating section sizes.
With drawings in place, manufacturing could begin and suitable contractors were appointed to supply the Reynobond cladding with the pearlescent finish required by the client.
Once on site and with much of the development underway, BoA co-ordinated a number of 100 tonne crane lifts, from a suitable distance, so as not to damage the finished piazza flooring.
Once in place BoA worked closely with other trades to ensure roof sections, lighting, cladding and other requirements were installed perfectly. Other works on the site were manufactured and installed to BoA's high standards.
The architects were thrilled with the finished result, which is an impressive feature of Media City and illuminates the public space used for many of the BBC's outside broadcasts.
