Located on the former airbase at Chicksands in Bedfordshire, Priory House is the new centralised administration office for Mid Beds District Council. The Council has requested a circular design for the council chambers and had specified a roofline that rotated through two independent planes (see 3D Model opposite).
ISG Interior Exterior was appointed as main contractor and BoA were appointed to develop the superstructure of the building. As a result there were several challenges to overcome.
The architect and ISG Interior and Exterior provided the design of the building and requested that BoA provide the connection details that would make the drum and sweeping roofline possible. Using Tekla Structures (formerly known as Xsteel) our CAD team created a 3D model of the entire superstructure in order to create the general arrangements and the complex connection details.
Throughout this initial development phase BoA worked closely with the architect and engineer in order to ensure that the aesthetic the client sought could be achieved. Once confident that all the complications were suitably overcome the final production drawings were sent for approval. Fabrication drawings were then created and work could commence on the 200 tonne structure required to create Priory House.
BoA worked closely with ISG and other trades in order to satisfy the tight build programme. BoA installation teams delivered the 200 tonne structure in three phases over a five month installation period.
Priory House is now in use as the Mid Beds District Council centralised administration offices and is proving to be a valuable asset to its new owners. The unique design elements have not only created an interesting and dynamic building but have provided the client with a facility that enriches the working life of its staff.
